Ross of Mull Historical Centre
IERM has evolved from the grass roots interest of local people in their own past and its relation to their present identity.
IERM are currently working on an access and interpretation project – Discover the Ross one of 31 projects managed by Nadair Trust and primarily funded by HLF. This involves the development of several walking trails, all of which explore townships on the Ross of Mull. Each trail will have its own illustrated guidebook, and a programme of events is to be organised to promote awareness of our work. The Ross of Mull contains the remains of a large number of cleared crofting townships that are accessible to the visitor through the information made available in the centre; linking documentary data with the physical evidence on the ground. Initially a three-year project, Discover the Ross is due to be completed in August 2004. However, experience gained from managing it will now be used to develop further projects.
With the help of a grant from the Scottish Land Fund & Community Land Unit we were able to purchase the Old Mill & Cottage, Bunessan in 2001. We are currently seeking further funding to develop this as a permanent home for Ionad Eachdraidh Rois Mhuile. This will be supported by a programme of research - including further study of MoLRS sites on the Ross of Mull.
One of the most exciting sites is the deserted township of Shiaba. Scheduled as an ancient monument it demonstrates the evolution from medieval and pre-crofting land use to the present day.
IERM welcomes visitors to its temporary centre in Bunessan and have consistently provided a genealogical service to the Ross Diaspora.
