Since the summer of 2000, a team from Plymouth State University (State of New Hampshire) has been researching medieval or later rural settlements on the west side of Loch Lomond, working completely within Inveruglas Farm. Most or all of these sites derive from the period of residency by Clan MacFarlane, and field work has included above-ground clearing and drawing of the walls of the earliest MacFarlane castle (ca. A.D. 1400-1654), located on Inveruglas Isle in Loch Lonond.
The Clan MacFarlane research project has spent the most time conducting a systematic site survey in the hills overlooking Loch Lomond, where there are the sites of numerous shieling huts, enclosures, and a few small corn-drying kilns. The group has also been working at the site of a byrehouse, located in the Port a' Chaipuill area on the west shore of the loch.
The project is attempting to document archaeologically the rise and the ultimate departure of Clan MacFarlane from within its original clan territory.
