The Highland Settler Project is the first attempt by a British team to investigate the archaeological traces of nineteenth century Scottish emigration to Nova Scotia. The project arose from an interest in social identity and ethnicity, and a desire to understand the consequences of Diaspora upon individual and group lifestyles.
Connected to the Flora MacDonald Project, the Highland Settler Project adopts an international perspective to the investigation of social memory and tradition, spanning both sides of the Atlantic.
The first season of the project commenced in Nova Scotia in September 1996 and preliminary fieldwork has been completed in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, and MacKinnon’s Brook and St Rose, Cape Breton.
