>> East Schiehallion Archaeological Survey

This survey is being carried out by Clare Thomas for the John Muir Trust, to record all visible archaeological sites and to give recommendations for their management. It started as a survey of the areas which might be affected by the creation of a new path to the summit, and was widened in 2002 to include all ground on the JMT property, up to a height of approximately 600 metres.

The survey is virtually complete. Sites found, which were not on CANMORE at the start of the survey, include several deserted settlements, field boundaries, field clearance cairns, and several huts, some of which may be shieling huts, and many grouse-butts - which had to be identified as such to rule them out from being huts. CANMORE already listed a cup-marked stone, two hut-circles and four groups of shielings.

It is hoped to carry out a study of relevant documentary evidence, probably next year.

The original survey started in December 1999, with more work done in May and August 2000. The full survey was carried out between August 2002 - May 2003. The report for the northern part of the area is virtually complete. That for the southern part - Glen Mhor - will be completed autumn 03/winter 04. It will initially be a JMT archive report, with copies to Perth & Kinross Heritage Trust & to NMRS.
